SW 941 Concepts and Issues in Gerontology
This elective course builds on the
SW 601, Human Behavior in the Social Environment (HBSE) and
SW 503, Social Work Practice with Communities and Organizations Curriculum Content Area. This course material will clarify that the process of aging is a result of the complex interplay of biopsychosocial and spiritual forces, including ethics and values, human systems and social policies that influence and impact upon individuals, families, and groups. In addition, individuals enter old age with a variety of strengths developed during a lifetime of interactions. This introductory gerontological course is designed to provide both theoretical and practice perspectives of the aging process which will aid them in understanding, analyzing, and advocating for supportive social justice policies and programs for aging persons. Issues related to the strengths of human development throughout the life span and to the general and specific problems of the later years will be examined. Special attention will be given to poverty, elder abuse, cultural and gender issues as they impact racism, sexism and ageism in populations at risk.
