ART 399II ST: Stories of American Architecture

This course will be a thematic study of American architecture that analyzes the built environment from pre-Columbian into the 21st century, focusing on the diverse stories of practices, building processes, regional variation, and cultural expressions of religion, politics, class, gender, and ethnicity within the borders we know as the United States. Throughout this course the discussion of American architecture will go beyond style and looking at buildings in isolation. It will consider how buildings relate to people/society, the landscape (designed and natural) as well as consider the material culture that have all contributed to the concept of American Architecture.
