ARCH 528 Hist&Theory of Arch & Int. Arch I
The first in a series of three interrelated courses, this course examines the theoretical motivations underpinning the design of the built environment from prehistory to the fifteenth century through archaeological artifacts and surviving structures (texts, drawings, models, artworks, machines, and buildings) at every scale from objects, implements and furnishings to interiors, buildings, and urban form. With examples from ancient and pre-modern civilizations from around the world, students will understand how cultural, philosophical, political, and religious traditions influenced the significance of meaning through the consumption of natural resources, the creation of interior and exterior spaces, and the development of aesthetic systems.
