School of the Humanities

Mission Statement

The School of the Humanities (OSH) at Marywood University fosters intellectual and personal growth through a dynamic liberal arts education. We prepare students to engage responsibly and effectively in an interconnected world through our commitment to the values of critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and

cultural awareness. Our programs in Criminal Justice, English, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Pre-Law, Religious Studies, and Sociology cultivate a passion for lifelong learning and empower students to pursue meaningful careers and contribute to the global community.

The School of the Humanities provides students with a broad and deep understanding of human culture, thought, and expression. For students within the Humanities programs, this means fostering critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and a nuanced understanding of diverse perspectives. For students from other disciplines, SOH offers courses that enhance their analytical and communication skills, providing a foundation for ethical decision-making and cultural competence in their respective fields.

SOH advocates for and demonstrates the value of its disciplines by highlighting how the study of humanities cultivates essential skills like critical thinking, effective communication, and research, and ethical reasoning—skills that are increasingly valued in a variety of professions. By showcasing successful alumni, integrating interdisciplinary approaches, and emphasizing the role of humanities in fostering a well-rounded education, SOH clearly articulates its relevance to students' personal and professional development.
