CHEM 112A ST: Chemistry in Our World
CHEM 112A is a Special Topics course designed for non-science majors. It is intended to raise awareness of chemicals and chemical principles which are used in everyday life. Following a brief review of the periodic table of the elements, students will explore topics of the chemistry of hot and cold packs for treating injury, how antacids work, how plants provide important medicines to treat disease, how soap works, the chemistry of baking, the chemistry of plastics, and environmental concerns of chemicals. Students will research and write a paper on a topic of their own interest. Students will also compare the benefits vs issues and risks of chemicals in our world, as well as explore the balance needed to responsibly use these chemicals. 3 credit online lecture Moodle course. Satisfies the chemistry requirement for Communication Sciences and Disorders majors.
