Requirements for All Spanish/Spanish Secondary Education Majors

All majors are required to consult their advisers prior to registration each semester. The responsibility of fulfilling the department’s requirements, however, rests with the student.

Additionally: Secondary Education majors must consult with Marywood’s Department of Education in order to fulfill the education sequence, screenings, and QPA requirements in an orderly and accurate manner.

In order for the department to recommend a major for graduation, 50 percent of the student’s major courses must have been taken at Marywood with a minimum QPA of 2.33 in the major. (Note: QPA requirements for Secondary Education are higher and follow Department of Education guidelines).Similarly, 50 percent of courses used to fulfill minor requirements must have been taken at Marywood University with a minimum QPA of 2.33 in the minor.

Transfer students at the junior level who are Spanish majors are required to take a minimum of 15 Spanish language credits at Marywood.

Modern Languages Practicum (6 credits)

Spanish majors must take six one-credit courses designed to offer them hands-on field experience in their areas of study through work at our department organizations, which include the Languages and Literatures Club, The Bayleaf, 91.7 WVMW, TV Marywood, and The Wood Word. The development of Spanish-language broadcasting or writing is highly encouraged. Additionally a regular one-hour course offers students training in professional development topics including mentorship, leadership, and career-readiness.

Students may take one (1) additional practicum as an elective (7 credits total). Additional credits may be taken with the approval of the program coordinator and the chairperson. All students, including transfer students, must take six (6) practica. An internship may be substituted for three (3) credits with the approval of the program coordinator and the chairperson.

Note: Secondary Education majors are not required to take practicum courses because so much of that work happens through their field hours and student teaching. However, they are invited to take any of them since all will give them skills helpful in teaching and advising the clubs that Spanish high school teachers often lead. We especially encourage them to take COMM 170L and 371L. If they elect not to take 371L, the section where students start preparing for the capstone, they should contact their advisers for advice about when to choose a capstone paper topic.
