SPAN 305 Foundations in Hispanic Literature

Foundations in Hispanic Literature is a methodological introduction to literary productions, analysis, and currents of the Spanish-speaking world. We focus on four specific genres: Prose, Poetry, Drama, and the Essay. The course's goal is to equip the student with the practical abilities to analyze a literary text in Spanish as well as with a basic knowledge of the major historical trends in Hispanic literature from its origins to today. The course does this through a sampling of the vast literary cannon that has unfolded from Pre-Columbian times, through the Middle Ages, into the present-a cannon that crosses oceans, borders, and linguistic boundaries. In addition to this, students learn the principles of close-reading analysis, work in a communication-based learning environment, and learn the basic tools needed for literary work and research.
