SPAN 399E ST: Central Mexican History and Culture

This introduction to central Mexican civilization and culture builds upon the rich experience of living in an immersion environment with local families. In addition to classes on the campus of the Universidad Iberoamericana de Puebla (sessions which will draw in part on the readings in the textbook), the course will include key field trips to the indigenous town of Oaxaca, Mexico City, and Cholula; these guided visits will promote encounters with a host of pre-Hispanic archeological sites and colonial/modern monuments of historical, cultural, and architectural importance. Furthermore, students' understanding of Mexico (from all historical periods) will be complemented by exposure to diverse cultural manifestations in museums, regional markets and restaurants, workshops on traditional crafts, and varied demonstrations by artisans. This course will run 1 week online and 2 weeks on site in Puebla. Travel to Mexico is mandatory for all enrolled in course. Taught in English.
