Traditional Spanish language majors must complete 39 semester hours in the major language, excluding 100-level courses. This major is designed for students whose primary career goal is to work in Spanish-related fields (e.g. translation, international aid or business, communications, writing, etc.) or to go on to graduate school in Spanish. Courses emphasize fluency in the language as well as learning about Hispanic cultures, literatures, and histories.
The Applied major is a 30-credit version of the major for students with another primary goal who want to add a double-major in Spanish. This is for pre-professional students seeking fluency in Spanish language and culture so that they may better communicate with future clients.
Spanish/Secondary Education is for students who intend to teach Spanish in middle or high school; it has the same grounding in language fluency and cultural competency as the Traditional major but adds coursework in teaching methods.
