COUN 598E St: Introduction to RehabilitationýCounseling

An introduction to the Rehabilitation Counseling Profession. The course will take a closer look at the medical and psycho-social aspects of disabilities. An emphasis is placed on the impact of the individual, family, and support system. The process of reasonable accommodation and assistive technology is also explored. The student will gain an understanding of the medical and psychosocial aspects of disability through the study of conditions and diseases, their etiology, natural progression, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Through this course, readings, lecture, discussion, and experiences that we will walk away with an appreciation of what it means to live with a disability. That we will be open to the joys and struggles of human life and strive to be hopeful, optimistic, empathetic, creative, resourceful, and committed in the important work that we do as counselors working with individuals who live with disabilities.
