Requirements for All English Majors

All majors are required to consult their advisors prior to registration each semester. The responsibility of fulfilling the department’s requirements, however, rests with the student.

Additionally: Secondary Education majors must consult with Marywood’s Department of Education in order to fulfill the education sequence, screenings, and QPA requirements in an orderly and accurate manner.

In order for the department to recommend a major for graduation, 50 percent of the student’s major courses must have been taken at Marywood with a minimum QPA of 2.33 in the major. (Note: QPA requirements for Secondary Education are higher and follow Department of Education guidelines).Similarly, 50 percent of courses used to fulfill minor requirements must have been taken at Marywood University with a minimum QPA of 2.33 in the minor.

Gateway Course for Literature and Writing

ENGL 304A: Studio (1)

This course will be linked with a 3-credit English course; students must register for both simultaneously. The 3-credit course may vary from semester to semester.

This course will partner with a different 300- or 400-level English class to enable students to engage in additional discussion of class material and hone their writing, speaking, and research skills to apply inside and outside classes. Students will also be expected to develop professional and leadership skills by working on department publications and activities. Limited to English majors only or by permission of the English Program Coordinator.

Senior Capstone

ENGL 495 - Senior Seminar (3)

Students will consider issues related to the discipline while building on research and critical thinking skills as they pursue an individual research project that culminates in a seminar paper. The course emphasizes drafting, the writing process, critical thinking, research methods, and oral presentations. It is required of all English majors. Normally offered in Spring semester only.

Prerequisite: ENGL 160.  Restricted to English majors and minors.
