AT 520 History & Theory of Art Therapy

This course is designed to stimulate thought and discussion of the philosophical, pragmatic, and historical bases of art therapy. It provides an understanding of the historical antecedents and ongoing conceptual development of the field of art therapy, the continuum of practice and professional approaches within art therapy, the development of art therapy as a therapeutic profession, and the contributions of major art therapy theorists and practitioners. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify leaders and their contributions to the field of art therapy. Essential questions that are the foundation of the art therapy profession will be explored through lecture, discussion, presentations and art making experiences. Students will be asked to explore and consider diverse viewpoints on the practice of the profession to begin developing a personal art therapist identity.
