ART 350 History of Latin American Art

This course will explore the art and culture of Mexico and Peru in the pre-Columbian, colonial, and modern periods. Particular emphasis will be placed on the ancient cultures of the Maya and Aztecs in Mexico, and the Inca in Peru, followed by an exploration of art produced after Spanish conquest, culminating in a study of modern and contemporary Mexican and Peruvian art. Students will consider issues around how the history of this part of the world has been written, and how we can more critically examine the impact of Latin American art and culture on its history.
