PA 562 Psychiatry
Psychiatry is designed to educate the physician assistant student with basic concepts in psychiatry. Students learn how to conduct a thorough psychiatric interview and mental status exam. The course includes how to use the DSM-TR IV multiaxial classification system and updated on the DSM V diagnostic changes. Major psychiatric diagnoses are reviewed corresponding to the PANCE blueprint. Each topic includes definition, etiology, risk factors, epidemiology, signs and symptoms, differential, DSM V diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Legal issues in psychiatry are reviewed, along with commitment status. Different types of psychotherapy and alternative treatments are discussed. Students learn about psychiatric medications along with serious side effects from psychiatric medications. Students are instructed on the acute care of psychiatric illnesses relevant to children, adolescent, adult and elderly populations.
